The Cross and the Crescent

A Christian Response to Two Decades of Islamic Affirmation in Nigeria

Patrick Lambert Udoma

Book cover The Cross and The Crescent is a historical analysis of events and issues in Nigeria in the last two decades of the twentieth century, showing the obvious religious commitments in the various forms of Muslim affirmations of the principles of Islam and the subsequent responses from the Christian community.

Religion permeates all aspects of the daily lives of most Nigerians. Analysts of events in the country often neglect the religious perspective in preference to other factors. Although these factors are relevant for a proper understanding of the different events, this work goes further to show that it is equally important to examine the religious aspect, as religion plays a vital role in the lives of most Nigerians.

The desires of Muslims to affirm the principles of Islam in the affairs of Nigeria and the subsequent responses from Christians in the country have made peaceful coexistence between the two communities a difficult task. This book offers new methods of promoting sustainable and realistic cooperation between Nigerian Muslims and Christians of the twenty-first century as they continue to hold firm to their respective religious beliefs and practices.
