In the midst of the liturgical crisis with which we are all too familiar, this little book calmly lays forth the rich liturgical heritage of the traditional Roman Mass. What is a sacrament? What is the Mass? What is the liturgy? After addressing these questions, the author examines the detail, historical origin and meaning of the rites of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
It is our prayer that this book will in some measure help the faithful to appreciate and more profoundly to love the Mass, and so contribute to a deepening of what Pope St. Pius X called "that true Christian spirit" whose "indispensable fount ... is the active participation in the holy mysteries and in the public and solemn prayer of the Church."
With this intention, we renew the call made by Dom Prosper Guéranger over 150 years ago: "Open your hearts, children of the Catholic Church, and come and pray the prayer of your Mother!"

The Abbey of Le Barroux is one of the many new communities in France which celebrate the traditional Roman Mass, in complete loyalty to the Holy See. Raised by Rome to the status of an Abbey sui juris in 1989, the community now has about 60 monks. The Saint Austin Press has so far published three books written by monks of this monastery, Discovering the Mass, The Sacred Liturgy and Four Benefits of the Liturgy. Two more are in preparation.
