What's New?

Reflections Poems by Ruth Asch. Ruth Asch's religious faith deeply marks a poetic voice which is filled with meditations on human weakness redeemed by transcendent beauty. The poems in this book cover a wide spectrum of style and tone, from reflective sonnets to witty free verse, capturing many of the thoughts and experiences of this young woman for whom words and feelings acquire new energy and meaning, through her distinctive rhythm and imagery.

A History of the Spanish Heterodox; vol. 1 by Marcelino Menendez Pelayo, translated by Eladia Gomez-Posthill. A Spanish saga of heretics, witches and saints ... Menéndez Pelayo, Spain's leading intellectual figure in the 19th century, tells the glorious tale of how Spain's Catholicism heroically survived all attemps against her; and in beautiful prose too, here rendered into English for the first time. The present volume deals with the challenges early Christianity faced in Spain prior to the Middle Ages. Books 2 and 3(in preparation) bring the history up to the eve of the Reformation. The author's introduction to the first edition ends with a prayer: "May God give me the light of understanding and a humble firmness of will; may He steer and guide my pen to narrate without anger or bias the sad history of error among our peninsular people! May He grant that this history may foster enlightenment and benefit, not scandal, to Christians everywhere." Few books of ecclesiastical history make for such a gripping read.

The Saint Austin Press was founded in 1996 by a group of young Catholics preparing to celebrate the 1400th anniversary of St Austin landing in England in 597.

At that time there was no significant Catholic book publishing in the UK, a stark contrast with the vibrant publishing scene of the 1950s.

In the years that followed, the Catholic Truth Society carried out an overhaul of its organisation and moved slowly back into publishing books as well as pamphlets. In addition, Family Publications and Gracewing evolved into fully-fledged Catholic publishing houses.

In its most active period the Press was publishing a book each month and we in fact published over 50 titles in a relatively short space of time. Pleased with these developments, and in a bid to provide a forum for the renaissance in orthodox Catholic intellectual circles in Britain - in close contact with the much more active Catholic world in the United States - Saint Austin's Publisher, Ferdi McDermott, together with Robert Asch, then Editor of the Press Joseph Pearce, then beginning his career as a successful literary biographer, founded a new monthly review of culture, StAR (the Saint Austin Review.)

Since then StAR has been taken over by Ave Maria University in the United States and is now published 6 times per year. With the welcome expansion and professionalisation of Catholic publishing in the UK Saint Austin Press now sees its task as keeping key titles in print from its backlist and providing opportunities for more scholarly works to be published. It continues its work of promoting conferences and study courses, in partnership with other institutions such as Chavagnes International College in France.
